The Science
Why Nighttime Guardians Work……
Children’s brains are incredibly receptive in the early years. Up until around age 8 or 9, they spend much more time in brain states linked to imagination and learning, which means they absorb messages from the world around them very easily.
When children struggle to sleep, it’s often because their nervous system is on high alert.
Even if they seem fine during the day, their brain may still be producing stress hormones that keep it scanning for danger. Think of it like this.
If a real tiger was sitting at the end of your bed, would you be able to fall asleep? Of course not. Your brain would stay alert and hyper-vigilant because its job is to protect you.
For some children, their imagination can make fears feel just as real to the brain as that tiger.
But the good news is, the imagination that creates fear can also create safety.
Think of the brain like a garden. Thoughts are seeds and fears are weeds……Whatever gets the attention grows.
Nighttime Guardians give a child’s imagination something reassuring and protective to focus on instead.
Through story, repetition and bedtime ritual, the brain begins forming new associations around sleep:
“I am safe.”
“I am protected.”
“I can relax.”
Over time this creates a powerful habit loop where bedtime becomes linked with calmness and security.
And when a child feels safe, sleep comes naturally.
